🎨 How to color it

Color the butterfly’s wings with tawny orange, cream patches, and charcoal edges, then make the thistle bloom purple and the tall grasses sage green. Use sharp colored pencils for the wing cells, tiny eye spots, and thistle bristles, working from the outer outlines toward the center so the fine details stay clean. Try a pale blue wash behind the grasses, leaving a narrow white glow around the butterfly’s antennae and lifted wings.

Every afternoon, when the hillside smelled of sun-warmed stems and dry mint, Sylva counted thistle bells. She had set herself a small rule: no skipping, no guessing, and no flying away until she reached one hundred. The purple heads nodded in the wind, and their prickles clicked softly against the grass like tiny combs.

Then one day, cloud-shadow rolled over the slope before she reached ninety. Because of that, the thistle bells closed their dusty faces, and because of that, the bees tucked themselves under leaves with sleepy golden legs. Sylva held still on a bristly crown, listening. One bell was missing. “Wait with me,” whispered a grass stem.

At last the cloud loosened. A thin blade of light touched the lowest thistle, where one late bell opened with a powdery scent. One hundred. Next time you see her balanced above the prickles, see if you can find the quiet bell that rewarded Sylva’s waiting, among the sun-warmed stems and dry mint.
