Before the spiral had a center, Esmé set herself a small trial: follow one silver curve without lifting her pencil from the glass atlas. The observatory smelled of dust and cold mint tea; outside, star-points clicked softly in their sockets. Her line wandered past gold angles, blue rings, and little constellations that tugged at her curiosity until she forgot the challenge and kept going simply to see where wonder led. At last every curve leaned inward, not falling, but listening. Esmé placed one quiet dot where the paths met, and ever since, the dark center waits while all bright questions turn around it.
