🎨 How to color it

Layer deep navy into the maze walls, antique gold on the central sunburst, ruby red on the four compass arrows, and cool silver in the triangle border. Use sharp colored pencils and rotate the page as you work so the narrow curved corridors and tiny dots stay crisp. For a luminous twist, shade each ring slightly lighter as it approaches the center, as if the compass were guiding color inward.

Beneath the city’s last stair, Callan unfolded the brittle survey cloth and set the plain bone compass in the margin, the way his aunt had taught him. The chamber smelled of wet limestone and old iron, and every footstep returned as a softer footstep, circling him. He had come to match one unnamed passage to the maps, to give the blank a proper place.

The needle did not twitch toward north. It leaned, paused, then leaned again, answering the carved rings under his boots. Callan followed without hurry: left through a cool arch, right past a wall beaded with mineral glitter, inward where the air held a faint sweetness like rain on dust. The little compass had always seemed too simple for a restorer’s kit, only bone, brass, and a scratched lid.

At the center, the needle stilled over a star cut into the floor. Then the scratch on the lid caught the lanternlight and became a word in his aunt’s hand: Here. Callan laughed once, quietly, not because he had found the passage, but because the passage had been holding a place for him all along. Above him, the city hummed; below it, the rings kept their patient turn, and the plain bone compass rested in the margin.
