Before the sky had round beads between its glass-bright seams, Astra carried one dull bead under her tongue, smooth as rain-worn stone and warmer than it should have been. She wanted to keep the first enormous laugh of morning from bursting too soon; below, the cloud bells were still asleep, and the star-cut windows smelled faintly of cold metal and honeyed dust.
Then the bead began to hum. Not a song, not quite—more like wings brushing silk in the dark. Astra rose, mane snapping, and the secret pressed against her teeth until she could not hold it. She opened her mouth over the paneled heavens, and joy spilled out in a bright, round note. Every seam it touched made another little circle to catch the sound, and every circle held a piece of it for someone else.
Ever since, the stained-glass sky keeps those round beads wherever happiness became too large for one heart.
