Before the sun warmed the wet bark, Sela tucked a tiny blue bead under her tongue and climbed to the listening branch. The bead was only a seed-polished bit of river glass, but it clicked against her teeth like a small promise. Below her, palm leaves held silver drops, and somewhere beyond the vines came three hollow notes: hoo, hoo, hum. Sela wanted to answer them, just once, without hiding behind her mother’s tail.
She set one hand on the moss. It felt cool and springy, smelling of rain and green shadows. The forest breathed around her. Hoo, hoo, hum. Sela lifted her chin, pressed the bead to the roof of her mouth, and made the smallest whistle she had ever dared. “I’m here,” she whispered.
From inside the fallen branch, a tree frog answered with the same clear note, and the blue bead trembled softly—not magic, not treasure, but a perfect little echo stone. Sela whistled again, and the frog sang back until the leaves seemed to listen with her. If you find her bright eyes among the vines, you may catch the moment the tiny blue bead becomes a brave little hoo, hoo, hum.
