🎨 How to color it

Layer the owl’s feathers in tawny brown and cream, give the pine needles a deep forest green, the cones a warm umber, and the weathered branch a cool gray-brown. Use sharp colored pencils and follow the engraved feather strokes, building color from the outer wing edges toward the bright round eyes. Try a faint indigo-to-silver dusk wash behind the ear tufts so the warm owl seems to lean out of the night.

The salt wind rushed over the cliff pines, quick and bright, and Selwyn held a forked twig under one claw as if it were a captain’s rail. He had brought it from his old hollow for his first survey beyond the sheltered grove; smooth, ordinary, hardly more than a splinter, it kept the night from feeling too wide. Below, waves clapped the rocks in silver bursts, and the resin smell of broken pine warmed the cold air.

He hopped higher, branch to branch, feeling bark ridges press his feet, and raised the twig to mark the line where the sea met the sky. Then the fork caught moonlight. Not from above—from inside. A tiny bead of sap, dried clear between the prongs, held the reflected stars in a trembling map.

Selwyn laughed once, breathless and brave, and turned the twig until the brightest spark lined with the far beacon. The wild ridge, the old hollow, the open sea: all of them met in that small shining notch. The salt wind rushed over the cliff pines, quick and bright.
