Before the sun slid behind the far hills, a small cub named Nalo padded through silver grass, sniffing for the place where every lion met at dusk. The air smelled of dust and crushed leaves, and each thornbush looked like the last. Then a weaverbird dropped from nowhere, chattering, “You’re standing in the middle of the answer.”
Nalo blinked. There was only a thin acacia beside him, its branches pointing every which way. The bird tucked a yellow feather into Nalo’s mane and said, “Purr if this is your place.” Nalo purred—not loudly, but warmly enough that the trunk shivered. From the grass came his father’s heavy steps and his mother’s soft breath, and they pressed close on either side.
Here is the secret: that acacia heard Nalo’s purr and bent its top into a wide, leafy roof, so no cub would ever miss the meeting place again. Ever since, lions gather beneath belonging branches at dusk. If you see three little birds over the hills, maybe one is still keeping Nalo’s secret.
