🎨 How to color it

Color the pancakes golden tan, the syrup maple amber, the blueberries deep indigo, the strawberries bright red, and the little potted plant fresh green. Use sharp colored pencils for the tiny berry seeds, plate dots, and tiled table lines, then switch to smoother strokes for the wide pancake layers. Try shading the syrup drips darker at the bottom so they look thick and glossy as they slide down the stack.

The story behind this coloring page

The Butter Door Opens — The first syrup of the morning waited in a small pitcher, smelling like warm trees and brown sugar. Read the full story →

The first syrup of the morning waited in a small pitcher, smelling like warm trees and brown sugar. Orin held it with both hands beside the tall pancake stack, listening to the mug hiss softly and the fork tick against the plate. He had never poured for everyone before, so he counted the berries on top, one by one, until his fingers stopped feeling jumpy.

A square of butter rested in the middle like a tiny yellow roof. When Orin tipped the pitcher, one slow ribbon slid over the butter, around the blueberries, and down the pancake cliffs. The room went quiet except for the soft plop-plop of syrup finding its way.

Then the butter shifted. Not melted—shifted, like a little door. Under it, pressed into the top pancake, were three tiny words: POUR WITH DAWN. Orin looked toward the window, where the first gold stripe of sunlight touched the tiled table, and he poured again, this time right where the light pointed. The syrup glowed, the berries shone, and breakfast seemed to breathe in. Next time you see that butter square, check whether it is hiding the dawn.
