🎨 How to color it

Color the basket honey brown, the apples ruby red, the bananas sunny yellow, the grapes violet, and the farmers market sign leafy green. Use sharp colored pencils for the basket’s crisscross weave and grape clusters, then switch to lighter strokes for the tents and signs in the background. Try making the front fruit extra bright and the distant produce softer, so the basket looks like the star of the market table.

Every Saturday, before the striped tents stopped flapping, Nico stacked apples into a basket crown and checked the brass market bell. Clang at nine meant shoppers could rush in. But one morning the bell rope hung limp, and only a tiny giggle answered from the fruit table.

Because of that, the pear seller blamed the wind, and the banana twins accused a squirrel with excellent manners. Because of THAT, Nico followed a trail of grape stems to the fattest basket, where apples bumped, bananas wobbled, and something sneezed, “Pip-pip!” from under a pear. He lifted a leaf and found Zib, the runaway market parakeet, wearing the missing rope like a scarf.

“Bell first, fashion later,” Nico whispered. Zib nipped the rope onto the hook, the bell sang CLANG, and every stall cheered so loudly the grapes trembled. After that, Zib rode in the fruit basket each Saturday, exactly where the jokes were freshest and the smells were sweetest. If you spot a curled leaf near the pears, don’t tell—Nico still saves that seat.
