Inside her speckled shell, Fia tapped tap-tap for the warmest sunbeam. The shell smelled like clean rain and soft grass. Crack! She pushed out past a wavy blue stripe and a purple bow, then stepped into the flower patch. The grass tickled her toes. A tiny glowbug blinked beside a daisy, shivering under a leaf. “Can you spare a sunbeam?” he whispered.
Fia wanted to keep the golden spot all to herself, but she fluffed her new wings and waddled closer. The glowbug climbed onto one warm feather. His light grew honey-bright, and soon the daisies, eggs, and curled leaves glowed too. Fia carried that shine back to her shell, where it spilled over every crack. Next time you see her open wings, can you tell which little light came along for the ride?
