Every evening, when the reeds smelled green and damp, Vera set herself the same little challenge: glide from the willow bend to the far lilies and count ten perfect ripples. One, two, three—she moved so smoothly that even the dragonflies seemed to pause in the gold light.
Until one evening, an eleventh ripple appeared beside her, round as a bracelet and not made by her feet. Because of that, Vera turned from her usual path. Because of that, the ripple led her past sleeping lily buds, past cattails ticking in the breeze, to a place where the pond hummed under the water. “Who’s there?” she whispered.
The hum rose, and a hidden spring bubbled up, sending tiny silver rings outward. Vera stopped counting. She listened until the pond’s cool song made her curious enough to wonder what else had been speaking softly every day. Next time you see those rings around her, can you guess which one was the first to run away?
