In the warm town clinic, Lila pressed a seashell to her ear and whispered, “I’m playing Find the Smallest Sound.” She wanted to hear the tiny bell that Nurse Orla said lived somewhere in the waiting room. Lila left her soft chair, tiptoed past the leafy plant, and counted sounds: tap-tap shoes, crinkle paper, hum-hum lights. The floor felt cool through her socks. Then her seashell slipped under the little stool. To get it back, Lila had to crawl through dust that smelled like chalk.
Under the stool, she found no bell—only a silver button with a bear face on it. Teddy sat waiting with a floppy smile, so Lila clipped the button to his chest and listened with the stethoscope. Boom-boom, jing! The secret bell was inside Teddy’s pretend heart. “Everybody listen!” Lila called, and the waiting room filled with giggles big enough to share.
