At the sandy crossroads, Quibble polished his coconut coin until it smelled like warm toast and sea salt. He tucked it under his scarf, climbed the crooked signpost, and practiced his finest pirate squawk: “Treasure to the left! Giggles to the right!” The open chest below glittered with beads and buttons, but Quibble kept patting the plain brown coin as if it were the king of all loot.
Soon, fiddler crabs clicked across the sand, gulls landed in a row, and even the palm leaves stopped shushing. Quibble tapped the coin with his beak—tock, tock, tonk—and every creature answered with a sillier sound. A crab clacked spoons. A gull burped. Quibble laughed so hard his hat slid over his eye patch.
Then a tiny hermit crab popped out from inside the coin. It wasn’t a coin at all, but the lid of her traveling soup pot, and Quibble’s tapping had called everyone to supper. He placed it proudly on the chest like a bell, and the whole crossroads rang with happy noise. If you spot the plainest treasure near Quibble, listen closely—it might still be saying tock, tock, tonk.
