Every evening, Rio flew the same green circle above the rainforest canopy, testing branches with one careful claw before the flock settled for night. He wanted the youngest birds to have a safe roost before the blue shadows filled with frog songs and the wet-leaf smell rose from below.
Until one day, the strongest branch gave a soft, hollow clonk. Because of that, Rio leaned closer instead of calling everyone away, and his beak brushed a vine knot no bird had bothered to peck. Because of that, a tiny bell-shaped seed pod rolled out, shining amber in the last light and humming when the wind touched it.
At the sound, the whole flock grew still. The old macaws told Rio the pod only sang over trees ready to hold many wings. Finally, Rio tucked it back into the secret knot, settled on the branch, and felt the hush answer through his feet. If you return to the vines above him, you may spot the place where the quiet bell is keeping watch.
