🎨 How to color it

Color the parrot with emerald wings, a sunny yellow chest, a coral-orange beak, and a bright blue ring around that big eye. Use sharp colored pencils for the feather scallops, leaf veins, vines, and thin waterfall lines, saving broader marker strokes for the cliffs and pool. Try fading the waterfall from pale aqua at the top to deeper turquoise near the splash, so the parrot’s warm colors pop against the mist.

Between the fern roots, a green parrot named Sable rolled a tiny shell bead under his claw and listened to the waterfall mutter, hush-hush, over the stone. He wanted one perfect echo to carry his flock’s home-song through the gorge, but the cliffs swallowed every note by noon. The bead looked like nothing—just a pale speck with a hole in it—but his nest-sister had traded three ripe figs for it before she flew north.

Sable tucked the bead against his beak and whistled. The sound slipped into the shell, came out thin and silver, and struck the falling water. Then—keep this between us—the waterfall answered in every parrot voice that had ever perched nearby: raspy aunties, squeaky chicks, even Sable’s own note, round and bright. The vines trembled. The pool smelled of rain and crushed leaves.

“Stay,” Sable whispered, and pressed the bead into a crack behind the branch where the spray could kiss it all day. Ever since, parrots choose branches near waterfalls when they need to feel exactly where they belong; if you spot Sable by the big leaves, maybe the hush-hush is saving his song.
