Every evening, Fenn wound the museum’s Christmas snow globes: three turns for the skating pond, two for the peppermint carousel, and one careful twist for the cabin under the glass. The globe always gave a polite shh-shh of snow, a puff of chimney smoke, and no trouble at all. Fenn wanted to finish before the night guard’s cocoa cooled, but he kept wondering why the cabin globe had a blank silver label when every other globe had a name.
Until one day, his mitten snagged the label’s curly edge. Click! The label swung open like a tiny door, and a folded note popped out smelling of pine sap. It said, DO NOT ASK THE SNOW QUESTIONS. Naturally, Fenn asked, “Where do missing candy canes go?” Because of that, the flakes spun into an arrow. Because of that, Fenn followed it past the moonlit display cases to a broom closet, where twelve candy canes were stuck to the ceiling in a sticky red-and-white chandelier.
Until finally, Fenn wrote a new label: CABIN OF NOSY WEATHER. The snow settled, the chimney puffed, and the hidden door clicked shut—unless you can spot the blank little place that might open again with one careful twist.
