🎨 How to color it

Color the monster’s skin mint green, his patched jacket smoky purple, the lightning bolts bright yellow, and the little laboratory roof slate blue. Use sharp colored pencils for the stitches, boot laces, fence wood grain, and tiny windows, then fill the larger jacket and sky areas with smoother strokes. Try giving the storm clouds lavender-gray edges so the yellow lightning looks extra zappy behind his grin.

Every evening, Dex carried a fizzing blue flask from the hill lab to the storm meter before the thunder counted ten. He liked the path, the squeaky fence, even the burnt-toast smell of lightning, but he did not like crossing when the bolts snapped low. He always patted his stitched jacket for the brass courage coin Professor Grindle had given him.

Until one evening, the coin was gone. Because of that, Dex froze by the fence as the clouds went grumble-bang and the flask bubbled faster in his hand. Because of THAT, he searched every patch, even the crooked pocket sewn shut since last Halloween. Rip! Out tumbled a tiny rubber chicken wearing goggles.

“Bawk if brave,” it squeaked. Dex snorted so hard his neck bolts wiggled. The laugh made his knees unlock, and he marched to the meter before thunder nine. Next time you notice his wide grin by the squeaky fence, you might guess which pocket still smells faintly of burnt-toast lightning.
