🎨 How to color it

Color the gnome’s tall striped hat in pumpkin orange and grape purple, his beard snowy white, the jack-o’-lantern pail bright orange, and the little mushroom red with white spots. Use chunky crayons or markers for the wide hat bands and beard curls, and let kids color right over the patch stitches if they want. Try making the four stars lemon yellow so they look like they popped out of the gnome’s pumpkin pail.

Under the tickly meadow grass, Pip tucked a tiny paper map into his coat pocket and swung his pumpkin pail. The map had four star marks, and Pip wanted to visit each one before the moon climbed high. “Zip, zap, star snap!” he sang, boots thumping the soft dirt.

First, a star blinked over the tall weeds. Then another shone near the round pumpkins. Pip hurried from mark to mark, his striped hat bobbing like a sail. The night smelled like leaves and cold apples.

At the last star, a spotted mushroom gave a tiny pop. Pip unfolded his map—and found mushroom rings drawn on the back! The stars had not been leading him away; they were helping him read the secret mushroom path. Next time you see Pip’s pumpkin pail, see if curiosity is bouncing inside it.
