🎨 How to color it

Layer the steam engine in deep crimson and brass, the passenger cars in forest green, the jagged mountains in cool slate and lavender, and the winding river in glacial blue. Use sharp pencils for the stained-glass mountain facets and window frames, then switch to smooth, even pressure along the broad river ribbons and train roofs. Let curiosity lead the palette by making each bend of the river a slightly different blue, as if the train is following a trail of changing light.

Every day, Ives measured one curve beyond the last milepost, no more, tapping his silver pencil against the rail before turning back. The pass smelled of pine sap and cold stone, and the river below made a soft tearing sound over its rocks. He had set himself the challenge because the mapmakers said the line ended in a neat half-moon bend, and neat endings had always made him suspicious.

Until one day, the half-moon did not close. The track leaned onward, bright as a thread under frost. Because of that, Ives rode past his allowed mark and found the river dividing into silver ribbons; because of that, he saw the peaks repeat themselves in the coach windows, each reflection showing one more hidden turn. Finally, he stopped counting and drew a single question mark across the margin of his map. At dusk, when the whistle rolled through the valley, his pencil tapped once against the rail beyond the last milepost.
