Across the inkvine field, Arden bounded after a bright, peppery smell that skipped ahead like sparks from a campfire. Carrot-fronds brushed his whiskers; dry grass snapped under his feet; every carved line along his ears seemed to hum with the pace. He paused only when the smell vanished in a pocket of still air, warm as paper held in sunlight.
He waited. A minute widened. Then a paper-thin kite-wasp, striped like a tiny festival banner, drifted from a curl of vine and hovered before his nose. It did not sting or speak. It simply rode the smallest breeze, looping over one carrot top, then another, drawing an invisible path Arden had been too hurried to see.
Arden followed at the kite-wasp’s speed: hop, hush, listen; hop, hush, breathe. The orange scent returned, richer now, mixed with leaf sap and dusty sweetness. By dusk, the field’s swirls had become a map under his paws, and the patient wind carried him forward like sparks from a campfire.
