🎨 How to color it

Color the Birthday Express engine cherry red, the tall candle cake buttery yellow with pink frosting, and the balloon bunch in sky blue, grape purple, and sunny orange. Use crayons or markers for the big train cars first, then switch to a sharper pencil for the small confetti, stars, and the “123” sign. Try making every other railroad tie brown and gold so the party train looks like it is riding on a birthday path.

Beside the meadow rail, Callum tapped his green flag against his knee: tap, tap, hush. The Birthday Express was due by the clover bend, carrying one tall cake and a bright cloud of balloons. Warm sugar drifted on the breeze, and the rails gave a tiny singing hum.

The train puffed closer, smiling through its round brass face. Callum lifted his flag, ready to wave it through, when a beetle lantern blinked under the daisies. A line of field mice stood there with thimble buckets of dew. “For the wheels,” whispered the smallest mouse.

Callum lowered his flag. The mice dabbed each axle until it shone, then tucked one dew drop under the cake car where no guest would ever see. The train rolled on softer than a sigh, and Callum waved at last: tap, tap, hush. If you follow the rails under the party cars, can you find the place where the secret kindness rode along?
