Each dawn, Cassian filed one tooth into a brass gear before the bellworks woke, chasing the small challenge of building a wing engine with no purchased parts. One morning the shop clock stopped mid-tick, and the room held its breath in oil, dust, and cold window light. Because of that, his master’s parade machine would stand silent; because of that, Cassian bolted his own hand-cut gears into the empty heart. At last the wings shivered open, not perfect, but alive with his fingerprints, and morning began with one bright filed tooth.
