Under the warm board rack, Tomo tapped a pink shell and listened for its ting. He wanted a louder chime for the sunset splash party, so he carried his board past the sleepy palms and out to the lagoon, where the water smelled salty and sweet.
A curly wave rolled in with a hush-hush roar. Tomo paddled out, but a crabby little current tugged his ankle band and stole one shell from his pocket. “Hey, keep it secret!” he whispered, and rode the wave anyway, knees bent, hair whipping.
At the curl, the board’s nose bumped—click! Hidden beneath a loose sticker was a tiny silver bell, ringing with every splash. Tomo laughed so hard the gulls answered. He raced back to the party, bell singing for everyone; if you spot the board’s nose, maybe you can hear that first salty-sweet ting.
