Every day, Della tucked her paper straw into the lemonade jar and called it her compass. She wanted to hear where the tiny garden hum came from, so she listened while bees buzzed and ice went clink-clink.
Until one day, the striped straw leaned all by itself. Because of that, Della tied on her blue bow and followed it past lemon wheels and tall daisies. Because of that, the jar fizzed louder, and a little strawberry charm bumped the glass like a knocking seed. “This way?” Della whispered.
At last, under the picnic cloth’s corner, she found a sleepy wind-up cricket humming in a bottle cap. Della turned its key once, and the garden filled with a soft zzzing song. Next time you spot the tilted straw, see if it is still pointing north.
