🎨 How to color it

Color the cheer uniforms cherry red and white, the pom-poms bright gold, the football field turf deep green, and the bleachers cool silver. Use sharp colored pencils for the jersey stripes, shoe details, yard numbers, and the many small fans behind the squad. Try fading the big blank banner from pale sky blue to sunset peach so the raised pom-poms pop in front of it.

Between the 30 and 40, Nova tapped her sneaker twice, then three times, trying to catch the odd little rustle above the bleachers. The squad was waiting for the band, the turf smelled warm and rubbery, and the big empty banner sagged between its poles like it was holding its breath. Then a voice, thin as paper, hissed, “Psst. I know where the missing sound went.”

Nova’s curiosity ran straight off without asking permission. She followed the rustle to the sideline, where an unexpected visitor clung to the banner’s hem: a tiny wind sprite, tangled in thread, cheeks puffed with stolen cheers. “Too many loose yells,” it whispered. “They needed tying.” Nova raised one gold pom-pom and shook it once—shhhh-RAH! The sprite sneezed. Every cheer popped loose, but not as noise. They landed in tidy beats: clap-clap, stomp, shout.

Nova grinned and sent the pattern down the line. Ever since, cheer squads use chants to keep wild cheers from blowing away; if you check the banner above the field, you might catch it listening for the next one.
