🎨 How to color it

Color the big tree’s crown in layered leaf greens, its trunk in warm chestnut brown, the deer in soft tan with cream spots, and the rabbit in pale gray. Use sharp colored pencils for the many small leaves and flowers, then switch to broader strokes or markers for the trunk and rounded tree canopy. Try making the forest trunks in the background a cooler blue-gray so the warm deer, rabbit, and sheltering tree feel tucked into the foreground.

At the edge of the fern glade, a young tree named Vireo clicked his twigs in the morning hush and began his private challenge: twelve new leaves before the sun touched the tallest mushrooms. Sap hummed under his bark like a sleepy bee. He pushed one leaf, then two, then three, each soft as a moth wing. When a little rabbit nosed through the wet grass, Vireo held still so he would not shake dew onto its whiskers.

By afternoon, Vireo had grown nine leaves and felt the ache of it in every branch. Then a spotted fawn limped into the shade, ears drooping, while the rabbit tucked close beside the roots. Heat pressed down, smelling of warm moss and dry bark. Vireo could have saved his last strength for three more leaves. Instead, he widened his lower branches, leaf by leaf, making a cool roof where nobody in the far forest could see. “Rest here,” he whispered, though only the grass heard.

When evening gold slid between the straight forest trunks, Vireo counted again. Only ten new leaves. But beneath him, the fawn breathed evenly, the rabbit’s nose twitched in a dream, and the mushrooms stood in a ring of shade. The next time you find the deer and rabbit under his branches, see if you can spot the two leaves Vireo never grew before the sun touched the tallest mushrooms.
