🎨 How to color it

Color the scarecrow’s hat golden brown, his sunflower bright yellow, the corn leaves deep green, and the pumpkins warm orange. Use sharp colored pencils for the tiny jacket patches, corn kernels, and straw fringe, then switch to broader strokes for the sky and field rows. Try making the falling leaves a mix of russet, maple red, and ocher so the air feels like early September.

All morning, the corn whispered hush-hush around Bram’s post while he counted the pumpkins by his boots. He wanted one silver moonseed from the far patch, the kind that only showed after sunset, so when the wind loosened his sleeve from the fence rail, he stepped down with his walking stick. Dry leaves tickled his straw ankles. The path smelled of dust, corn silk, and pumpkin vines.

Halfway across the rows, a pale moth bumped his hat brim. “Not yet,” she said, softer than paper. Bram’s knees creaked, and he waited while the sky cooled peach, then purple. Waiting cost him his favorite sunflower petal, carried off by the breeze, but at last the pumpkins opened their curled leaves. Inside one glow lay no seed—only dew, round as a tiny moon.

Bram carried the dew home in his patched hat and set it by the thirsty pumpkin at his feet. By morning, a new white blossom nodded there. Next time you see his raised hand among the corn, maybe he is still counting—hush-hush—the patient moons by his boots.
