Every night above the shuttered observatory, Vireo slipped into Madame Lark’s crystal ball and played Shiver-Share alone. He would hum one tiny boo into the glass, chase its silver echo around the curved wall, and catch it before the dust-motes stopped shining.
Until one night, he invented a new rule: whatever echo sparkled brightest had to be given away. His first bright echo burst like cold lemonade on his tongue and rang through the brass stand. Because of that, the attic spiders climbed down on silk threads to listen. Because of that, the sleepy star charts on the ceiling unfolded themselves with a papery sigh.
At last Vireo pressed both misty hands to the glass and let the boo roll out, not as a scare, but as a glowing, giggling note. “Your turn,” he whispered. The spiders plucked webs, the charts rustled constellations, and joy filled the room so fully it needed everyone’s noise to hold it. Next time you see the stars around the crystal ball, can you tell which sparkle carried Vireo’s tiny boo first?
