🎨 How to color it

Try a lavender princess dress, a gold tiara and star wand, orange jack-o’-lanterns, and rainbow candies peeking from the pumpkin pail. Use chunky crayons or markers for the big skirt panels, porch boards, and brick wall, saving a sharper pencil for the tiny hearts, stars, bows, and spider web. For extra Halloween sparkle, make the string lights alternate yellow and purple while the smiling star on the wand glows pale blue.

Every night before Halloween, Junie tapped her cardboard star wand on the porch boards—tap, tap, twirl—and practiced the grand parade curtsy. The wand looked like shiny paper, but it held the last gold sticker from her baby brother, and Junie kept it bright in her candy pail.

Until one night, the porch lights down the block went pop-pop-pop in the chilly wind. Because of that, little trick-or-treaters skipped the dark stoop with the quiet door. Because of that, Junie heard one tiny voice inside sigh, “No one can see the candy bowl.”

So Junie slipped over, tucked her dear gold sticker onto the doorbell, and tapped it with her wand. Warm light spilled over the bricks, the spider in the window bobbed, and feet came running. Junie spun away before anyone saw. Next time you spot her candy pail, can you tell what she gave up with a tap, tap, twirl?
