Under the striped awning, Dottie rolled three candy apples every evening: plop in syrup, twirl on sticks, sprinkle-sprinkle, done. She wanted them ready before the moon reached the top of the treat cart. Then one night, the black sprinkles sneezed. “Boo-choo!” they squeaked, and popped into tiny bats that flapped around the bowls.
Because of that, the caramel apple got a bat grin. Because of THAT, the red apple’s icing wiggled into a spiderweb, and a licorice spider skittered across it with sticky feet. Dottie’s knees went fizzy, but she held out the last apple and whispered, “Your turn.” The bat sprinkles looped around it, tied the wrapper into a fat bow, and dropped candy stars all around. Next time you spot the three apples, see if the tiny bats are still guarding the treat cart under the striped awning.
