🎨 How to color it

Color the watermelon flesh bright coral red, the rind lime and dark green, the picnic basket golden tan, and the smiling sun lemon yellow. Use chunky crayons or markers for the big watermelon and blanket squares, and don’t worry if little hands color over the tiny seeds. For a playful touch, make every other blanket square sky blue and leave the ant with one silly purple stripe.

Under the warm meadow sun, Willa wiggled onto the checkered blanket to make a shady, juicy spot. The basket smelled like bread crusts and strawberries, and the flowers nodded in the breeze. “Ahh,” Willa hummed, letting cool drops slide down her rind.

A tiny voice squeaked, “Permission to inspect the crumbs?” An ant in the grass saluted with two wobbly feelers. Willa giggled so hard a seed popped loose and bounced—plink!—beside a crust.

Soon the ant carried crumbs to a hidden parade of six smaller ants. Willa said nothing, only nudged one more seed their way. Next time you spot that little ant by the grass, see if he’s still guarding Willa’s quiet crumb party.
