At dawn, Veyra ran the ring-path of the celestial grove, fingers brushing bark warm as sunlit stone, chasing the quick tick-tick-tick she called the compass pulse. Leaves flashed green above her, birds cut blue arcs between branches, and the air smelled of apple skin, dry dust, and incoming heat. She did not hurry because she was lost; she hurried because every curve of the grove seemed to answer her footsteps.
The path widened into spirals, then narrowed under hanging fruit and silver crescents. Veyra followed the rhythm past star-shaped lichens, past roots that braided like ropes, past beads of dew strung along a perfect circle. The pulse grew louder wherever she placed her palm, then softer, teasing her onward with a bright little knock.
Only when she stopped to retie the red cord at her wrist did she notice the smallest mark in the dust: a seed-shaped notch between two roots, plain as a comma. From it rose the pulse—not from the towering branches, not from the golden rim, but from the tiny place everyone stepped over. Veyra laughed, breathless, and pressed her thumb there.
All around her, birds, apples, moons, roots, and rays seemed to swing into one tremendous wheel. The grove had not been guiding her somewhere else; it had been matching the beat she brought to it. Veyra ran the ring-path again, fingers brushing bark warm as sunlit stone, exactly where she belonged.
