🎨 How to color it

Layer the willow bark in warm umber, the drooping leaves in olive and sage, the pond in blue-green, and the water lilies in blush pink with golden centers. Use sharp colored pencils for the many leaf veins, reed blades, feather lines, and spiral bark details, then blend the wider pond ripples with light side-strokes. For a mischievous art nouveau twist, make every tiny spiral on the willow glow with a slightly different metallic accent, as if the tree has been quietly hoarding sunlight.

Before lunch, Cassian set himself the elegant, ridiculous challenge of counting every ripple in the willow pond without losing his place. The reeds clicked, dragonflies stitched blue sparks over the water, and he whispered, “Seventeen, eighteen,” while the willow trailed its leaves like green curtains trying not to laugh. More rings opened around the lilies; Cassian waited, counted, waited again. Then a finch on the branch gave a bright chirp, and three swallows answered from the air: they were dropping commas into his numbers. Cassian bowed to the conspirators and began again, patient as shade, counting the ripples before lunch.
