The safari jeep bounced over the savanna road, bump-bump, while Tavi held a faded blue ribbon tight in his fist. Before breakfast, he had tied matching ribbons to three low branches near a muddy water hole, so the smaller animals could find a drink when the sun grew hot. Nobody had seen him do it except the clicking grasshoppers and one nosy cloud.
Now the jeep rolled near an acacia tree, and a young elephant stepped beside the track with a happy rumble. On her ear fluttered one of Tavi’s blue ribbons, tied neatly like a tiny flag. Behind her came guinea fowl, a tortoise, and two dusty antelope, all following the bright little guide. “It worked!” Tavi whispered, waving with both hands. Next time you spot the smiling elephant, see if you can imagine that secret ribbon fluttering in the warm wind.
