Every day before the gulls finished their breakfast squawking, Zadie zipped along Shellwhistle Beach to mark the tide’s highest reach with a driftwood stick. She wanted to finish her newest shore map before the noon waves erased every clue. The sand smelled salty and warm, and her striped ball bounced beside her—thump, thump, thump—until one day it bumped a rock and answered with a tiny rattle.
Because of that, Zadie shook it harder. Something papery scratched inside, where nobody ever thought to look. She popped the plug, and out slid a curled-up note as dry as toast: TURN ME TOWARD THE LOUDEST WAVE. Because of that, Zadie aimed the ball at the crashing cove, and its colored panels lined up like arrows. “No way,” she whispered, already running.
The arrows pointed to a tide pool behind the foam, where a small brass whistle waited under a flat purple shell. When Zadie blew it, the beach rocks hummed and opened a narrow sandbar path for exactly seven heartbeats. She dashed across, marked the secret spot on her map, and sprinted back laughing as the sea slapped shut behind her. Next time you spot her waving by that rattle-happy ball, you’ll know the tide clue is still thumping, thump, thump, thump.
