Every night, Oswin polished his crystal staff until it made one shy wink—his private challenge was to brighten the grove without waking a single mushroom. One damp evening, the crystal sneezed lavender sparks into his beard. Because of that, the roots began twinkling like gossiping buttons; because of that, sleepy moths arrived wearing smug little halos, and the mushrooms demanded, “Our turn.” Oswin tried to hush them with both hands and only made the light bounce higher. Finally he bowed, tapped the staff once, and shared the shine with everyone, including the mushrooms, who blinked back one shy wink.
