🎨 How to color it

Color the gnome’s hat cranberry red, the young dragon spring green, the mountain crystals icy blue, and the distant pine trees deep forest green. Use sharp colored pencils for the dragon’s spots, crystal facets, and jagged cave lines, then fill the larger mountains with lighter side-strokes. Try making the winding path a warm sandy tan so it gently leads the eye from the gnome’s boots to the dark cave mouth.

At the foot of the crystal pass, Edrin tapped his silent doorstep charm and heard only the wind sift dust over stone. He wanted one clear bell-stone from the echo cave, just big enough to sing when rain was coming. The path beyond his burrow smelled of cold pine and metal-bright rock, and his boots felt suddenly too loud. Then a young dragon named Vela lowered her warm, pebbly chin. “I know a softer way,” she said.

They climbed where white peaks shone like teeth and birds cut tiny V’s across the sky. Edrin paid his price at the narrow ledge: his favorite blue button popped off and skipped into a crack. He did not chase it. He kept one hand on Vela’s wing and one finger pointed ahead, because pointing felt steadier than trembling.

Inside the cave, no bell-stone glittered on the walls. Vela sneezed, and the echo answered with a tiny ting from beneath Edrin’s own boot. Under a plain gray pebble lay his blue button, and tucked behind it was a seed-shaped crystal humming like rain in a teacup. Edrin carried it home, not for warning storms, but for remembering the first brave sound of his boots on the crystal pass; next time you see him pointing, can you guess which small stone is singing?
