Under the berry bramble, Doyle held his little basket very still. He wanted the berries that fell with a soft plink, because those were the sweetest for trail cakes. Leaves brushed his tall hat, and the air smelled like damp moss and mushrooms. Plink! One berry dropped in. Plink! Another rolled near his boot.
Then the bushes gave a swish, swish, and a fox stepped out with bright ears. Doyle froze, but the fox only sat down and listened. Plink! A berry bounced between them. “You heard it too,” Doyle whispered. Together they waited, tails and beard barely moving, until the basket filled slowly. Next time you spot Doyle’s basket, count the patient plinks hiding inside.
