🎨 How to color it

Layer the koi in pearl white and soft coral, the lotus flowers in blush pink, the curling water in teal, and the outer floral border in muted jade. Use sharp colored pencils on the tiny scalloped scales, then switch to light blending strokes for the long fins and wave bands. Try shading the empty center from pale aqua to white so the fish seem to be guarding a quiet pool.

Behind the old water court, where wet stone smelled of rain and iron tools clicked like teeth, Sarena carved a basin no wider than her arms. She wanted one thing made entirely by her own hands: a pool rim smooth enough to hold moonlight without spilling it. At dusk, two koi rose from the unfinished hollow, though no channel led there. One brushed her wrist with a fin, cool as silk, and whispered, “Leave a place for what you cannot carve.”

Sarena nearly laughed, because every inch of stone begged for pattern. Still, she set down her chisel and cut lotus petals, curling streams, and scale after scale around an untouched middle. When the koi began to circle, their tails folded the water into a ring, and the blank space grew still enough to reflect the first star. Since then, koi have circled silence in handmade ponds, keeping one clear center for the maker’s pride to rest.
