🎨 How to color it

Layer the dove in pearl gray and soft teal, fill the “Peace Begins with Me” letters with deep indigo, and give the garden flowers coral, marigold, and lavender accents. Use sharp pencils for the tiny swirls inside the bird’s wings and the patterned lettering, then switch to lighter pressure on the broad garden paths so the center stays airy. For a quiet glow, shade pale blue outward from the dove’s raised wing and let the circular flower beds deepen toward emerald at their curved edges.

At the patterned terrace, Ione carried a brush loaded with blue-black ink and a secret too bright to keep behind her teeth. She had been asked to write the welcome phrase for the evening gathering, but every grand word sounded hollow against the bees’ low humming and the warm mineral smell of sunlit stone. Then a dove landed on the blank center tile, scattering three fallen petals, and tucked its head as if hiding a laugh.

You did not hear this from me, but the oldest gardeners always knew birds kept spare sentences under their wings. Ione waited until the dove lifted one feathered arc, and there, in the small shadow, was a phrase no bigger than a seed: Peace begins with me. She painted it at once, and the letters filled with curls, dots, leaves, and tiny roads as though the terrace itself were leaning in to help.

When the guests arrived, they did not applaud; they exhaled together, which was better. Each person carried the phrase away in a quieter step, a softer hand on the gate, a smile offered before it was earned. Ever since, peace in that garden has never arrived as a parade. It begins small, under one lifted wing, with a secret too bright to keep behind the teeth.
