🎨 How to color it

Give the gnome’s tall hat deep teal petals, his coat a burnished copper, the surrounding vines sage green, and the scattered stars pale gold. Use sharp colored pencils and color the hat’s central flower outward, because the tiny petals, dots, and scalloped bands can blur if you jump around. For a polished twist, shade the beard from warm ivory at the cheeks to soft gray at the curled tips while keeping the background leaves cooler.

The story behind this coloring page

Between the thorny vines behind the old sky-watching shed, Rufus cut moons, petals, and little four-point stars from scraps of silverleaf. He had invented a game for one: hide a shape in his coat, repeat it on his hat, then let the moths find the match by lamplight. The glue smelled sharp as pine sap; his fingertips shone with dust. No one had asked for such a game, which made it better, like a password whispered into a keyhole.

By midnight, the moths ignored the lamp. They circled the star he had pressed highest on his hat, then the next, then the next, wingbeats ticking like tiny scissors. Above him, the real sky answered. One by one, new stars brightened exactly where his handmade marks had made their trail. Rufus held very still, proud enough to ache, while the darkness learned his rules. Ever since, gnomes say the smallest stars are not born first in heaven, but made by careful hands in a game of secret stars.
