Every night, after the ink stalls closed and the courtyard smelled of wet stone and fennel tea, Maribel added one hidden curl to the palace mandala and dared herself not to repeat a single shape. Until one day, a gust flipped over Varo’s practice sheet, smearing his perfect border into a tragic noodle. Because of that, Maribel stole ten minutes from her own challenge to redraw his edge; because of THAT, her final center was still blank when the dawn bell hiccupped.
She laughed, dipped her smallest brush, and filled the empty place with the colors left over from saving Varo’s work—ridiculous gold, scandalous pink, a blue bright enough to make pigeons gossip. No one saw her do it. At sunrise, Varo bowed before his rescued pattern, utterly puzzled, while Maribel hid a grin behind her tea and added one last hidden curl to the palace mandala.
