🎨 How to color it

Try tangerine and coral on the butterfly’s patterned wings, sunny yellow for the daisies, rose pink for the tulips, and soft green across the tall leaves and hills. Use sharp colored pencils for the wing spots, flower centers, and narrow grass blades, then switch to broader strokes for the open sky and rounded hills. For a special touch, shade the butterfly’s wings from deep orange near the body to pale peach at the edges, like sunlight passing through them.

Every afternoon, Sela played a game she called Sun-Step: land only where the light made a small golden island, then count three wingbeats before choosing the next one. The meadow smelled of warm grass and poppy dust, and the daisies clicked softly when beetles climbed their centers. Sela always chose close islands—leaf, stem, petal—never the wide space above the tulips.

Until one day, a cloud slid over the garden and erased every stepping place except one bright patch on the far side. Because of that, Sela waited on a bending bud while the wind tugged at her feet. Because of that, the bud dipped lower and lower, brushing the cool shadow under the leaves. “Just one quiet leap,” she whispered.

At last, she opened her wings into the empty blue and let the sun find her before she found the flower. The air hummed against her like a secret string. Look between the tall blossoms again—you can almost feel the place where Sela chose the next golden island.
