Under the warm milkweed leaf, Bree tapped her toes: pat, pat, pat. She had made herself a secret challenge—find three heart-shaped breezes before lunch and bring them back in her wings. “No telling,” she whispered to the sleepy flower beside her.
Out she fluttered, past a buzzy bee and a crumbly twig that snagged one tiny wing curl. Bree waited while the wind puffed: whoo… whoo… At last, one breeze smelled like clover, one jingled through starry seeds, and the third was so soft it nearly passed her by.
Back under the leaf, Bree opened her wings. The breezes had turned into quiet little hearts, more than three, bright as a kept secret. Look near her wings again—you can almost feel the whoo… whoo… under the warm milkweed leaf.
