Under the old arena’s broken arch, Bren chalked squares on the warm stone floor and tapped his axe handle twice: tok-tok. He wanted to invent a game no bard had ever named. The ogre Grubbo leaned over him, smelling of pine sap and turnips, and grinned around one chipped tusk. “If I roar, you guess what I mean,” Bren said. “If you’re wrong, I move one square.”
Grubbo roared like a barrel full of thunder. Bren guessed, “You mean… left foot?” Grubbo shook his furry head and pointed at a cloud shaped like a boot. Bren hopped to the boot-square anyway. Soon the game had rules about clouds, echoes, toe wiggles, and whether sneezing counted as a royal trumpet. Dust tickled Bren’s nose. Curiosity pulled him faster than caution.
Then the arch above them dropped a pebble onto the square marked KING. Both players stared up. Another stone clicked loose and landed on OGRE. The arch was answering too. Bren bowed. Grubbo bowed lower, nearly bonking him with the club. From then on, every roar, tap, and falling pebble made a new rule, and if you can spot the KING square, you know where the arena went tok-tok first.
