🎨 How to color it

Color the fire truck bright engine red, the ladder warm silver, the kitten soft orange, and the leafy tree in two greens. Use sharp colored pencils for the ladder’s crisscross beams, dashboard dials, tire treads, and the small words on the truck. Try a pale blue sky behind the clouds and birds so the red truck and orange kitten feel extra bold.

Behind the bakery on Maple Row, Junie pressed one glove to the warm side of Rescue 1 and began her private challenge: sixty silent breaths before touching the ladder lever. The truck smelled like rubber tires and raincoats. Above her, a tiny mew trembled from the oak, where Biscuit the station kitten sat wearing a helmet too big for his ears. The captain lifted one eyebrow, but Junie kept counting. Thirty-one. Thirty-two. Leaves scratched and whispered overhead.

At fifty-eight, Biscuit stopped wobbling. At fifty-nine, he tucked his paws around the branch. At sixty, Junie saw the branch dip away from the power line and toward the open side of the tree. “Now,” she said.

The ladder rose with a careful clank-clank, stopping exactly beside Biscuit’s branch. Ever since that afternoon, Rescue 1 never rushes its ladder; it waits one quiet minute first, because Junie proved that trees tell secrets if you give them time. Next time you spot that little helmet in the oak, see if you can keep Junie’s sixty silent breaths too.
