Every day, Nell walked the sunny block before the rescue parade and tapped each hood: fire truck, ambulance, police car. Clink, clink, clink—ready! She wanted the line to roll out neat and quiet, with the smell of warm pavement and popcorn in the air.
Until one day, the ambulance went “Whee-hee-hee!” instead of “Wee-oo!” Because of that, the fire truck snorted bubbles from its wash hose. Because of THAT, the police car blinked its lights like it had hiccups. “Who is tickling the siren?” Nell cried.
She peeked under seats, inside cones, and behind a hubcap. Finally, she found a tiny rubber duck tucked in the ambulance’s light bar, squeaking in the breeze. The parade rolled off laughing—clink, clink, clink—and next time you see those three smiles, can you guess where the duck might hide?
