Every morning before school, Ivo swept the meadow helipad and gave himself a challenge: find one new shape in the clouds before the first truck passed the fence. He had found a spoon, a rabbit, and once, a whale with a silver tail. The grass smelled wet and clean, and his broom whispered swish, swish, swish across the big painted H.
Until one day, a low thump rolled over the hills before any road sound came. Because of that, Ivo forgot the clouds and looked up as an air ambulance curved out of the brightening sky. Because of that, the younger kids at the fence began to shout all at once, too loud for the crewman waving from the pad.
Ivo lifted both arms. “Listen to the wind!” he called. The rotor wash slapped his vest and tossed the meadow grass flat, but the kids hushed, hearing the great blades chop the air like thunder made useful. When the helicopter settled, everyone saw the same wonder at once, too big for one person’s pocket. Next time you spot the sweeping rotor lines, can you feel Ivo’s swish, swish, swish?
