🎨 How to color it

Layer the puppy’s coat in warm sable and cream, make the braided collar weathered chestnut, and color the fern fronds in deep forest and new-leaf greens. Use sharp pencils for the fine fur strokes inside the ears and cheeks, then switch to slower pressure changes along each narrow fern leaflet. For a mischievous twist, add a tiny flash of brass to the collar ring and let the ferns behind one ear fade from dark green to silvery sage.

Beside the damp greenhouse bench, Vera nosed three fern stems into a wobbly crown and tried not to sneeze at the peppery soil smell. She had set herself one rule: no paws on the worktable, only snout, chin, and excellent ears. The crown grew lopsided, then grand, then suspiciously collar-sized. A beetle emerged, polished as a button, and tapped the buckle twice; the “crown” was actually a perfect fern display stand for him. Vera sat taller, proud of her handmade throne, while the beetle rode in state beneath those excellent ears.
