🎨 How to color it

Layer the puppy’s fur in honey gold, the roses in dusty pink, the daisies in butter yellow and white, and the hummingbird in teal. Use sharp colored pencils for the leaf veins, rose spirals, and feathery ear lines, then soften the puppy’s larger fur areas with light circular strokes. For a quiet secret effect, hide one pale lavender rose among the pink ones and echo that lavender in the butterflies’ wings.

The story behind this coloring page

Saffron Waits for the Hush — Under the rose arcade, Saffron kept one silver thimble tucked beneath her paw. Read the full story →

Under the rose arcade, Saffron kept one silver thimble tucked beneath her paw. It smelled of rain on metal and the hands that had mended her first collar, and she wanted to hear the tiny note it made only at dusk. When the note came early—ting, almost swallowed by bees—she left the warm hollow by the roots and followed it between thorny stems. A burr caught in her ear fur. Pollen dusted her nose. She waited beside each closed bud until it loosened a little more.

At the far end of the arcade, a hummingbird hovered over a daisy, green back flashing like wet glass. The thimble answered with one soft chime. Saffron nosed aside a curtain of leaves and found not a bell, but an empty snail shell, perfectly shaped to hold silence. She carried it home instead of the chime, moving slowly so its cool spiral would not crack. By dusk, the roses opened all around her, and the arcade filled with the hush she had been trying to hear since morning.
